Steven Sabados: a special design presentation

The Canadian Furniture Show was proud to welcome for a special design presentation, media personality and highly acclaimed designer of the S&C brand, Steven Sabados. On Saturday, May 28, Steven shared not only the latest S&C furniture design but also what’s evolving in the world of interiors - what’s hot, what’s not and what’s timeless!

“I’m so excited to be returning to the Canadian Furniture Show to not only showcase the latest S&C furniture but also share what’s new in colour, fabric and profile,” remarked Steven Sabados.

The S&C furniture brand was founded by partners Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman and was launched by their manufacturing partner Décor-Rest to rave reviews in 2007. Sadly, in the summer of 2015 the world lost Christopher Hyndman. As a tribute to Christopher and his passion for design, a dynamic new product team was created. Under Steven’s never-ending creative leadership as an artist, photographer and designer, the team continues to uphold the S&C philosophy of keeping design "timeless, fresh & fabulous". The S&C new collections include furniture, case goods, lighting, decorative accents, and area rugs.

David Chilton: an informative and inspiring talk

Visitors and exhibitors to the 2016 Canadian Furniture Show were treated to a rare opportunity to attend a live presentation by David Chilton, well-known as a former “Dragon” on CBC TV’s Dragons’ Den and best-selling author of The Wealthy Barber. This highly anticipated appearance was presented on Sunday, May 29, at 9 a.m., just before the opening of the Show.

Whether it’s helping millions of Canadians achieve personal financial success or investing in low-fat cookbooks, David Chilton has always had a knack for recognizing great ventures. Called “charming, unpretentious, and funny,” by The Chicago Sun-Times, David puts his business expertise and life experience to work in his informative and inspiring talks.

David began his career by self-publishing his book The Wealthy Barber in 1989. It was written in 26 months, and was specifically targeted toward those with little investment experience, in order to help them develop positive personal-finance habits. The book has become one of the most popular Canadian books of all time, selling over two million copies since its release.

His second book, also self-published, is The Wealthy Barber Returns, and is yet another runaway Canadian bestseller. David is also the publisher of the bestselling cookbooks Looneyspoons, Crazy Plates, and Eat, Shrink & Be Merry! (working with authors Janet and Greta Podleski).

David is an economics graduate from Wilfrid Laurier University, where he won the award for the highest mark in the country on the Canadian Securities Course. He is a frequent guest on national television and radio shows.

One hundred participants attended this inspiring conference and received a free autographed copy of his latest book.

Canadian Home Furnishings Awards Gala

2016 marked the 15th anniversary of the Canadian Home Furnishings Awards. The event was held on Friday, May 27: the day before the opening of the Canadian Furniture Show which was running from Saturday, May 28 to Monday, May 30.

The Canadian Home Furnishings Alliance (CHFA) honoured Angelo Gallo, President of Statum Designs Inc. with the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award. The CHFA established this Award to recognize those individuals who over their lifetime have made exemplary and sustained contributions to the Canadian home furnishings industry and their communities.

The Retailer of the year Award is dedicated to recognizing exemplary models of excellence and community service by Canadian furniture businesses. The first recipient of the 2016 Retailer of the Year Award from Eastern Canada was JC Perreault. The second recipient of the 2016 Retailer of the Year Award from Western Canada is Nordic Holdings Ltd.: Konto Furniture and Sofa Land.

The CHFA Board of Directors and the Events Committee congratulated the three Award recipients.

For 15 years the CHFA has been honouring our industry's most impressive individuals and organizations. The Canadian furniture industry has so many remarkable people and organizations within it and their success deserves to be celebrated. The awards not only spotlight individual talent but they also serve to enhance the industry and raise its profile.
